The Hill papers cite Matthew Furber (II) at 81 Pool Terrace, City Road, from a label or inscription dated 1815, and at 77 Turnmill Street in 1825. He was quite a prolific maker working for the London trade and labels are relatively rare. He worked to a number of models, mostly following standard London patterns typically with a yellowish varnish, but his better instruments - which seem often to be varnished in red - provide good interpretations of Italian models, probably influenced through the lens of the higher class English instruments of the Betts and Forster workshops.
